Ferguson's third loan in 18 months signals Serie A path, not Premier League

After 29 months away from Brighton's first team, the 21-year-old Ireland striker is in advanced talks with Genoa as his English top-flight prospects fade.

Evan Ferguson has not kicked a ball in a Brighton shirt for 29 months. In March 2024, during a 2–1 defeat at Liverpool, the then-19-year-old sustained an ankle injury that required a ligament repair procedure and ruled him out for six months. He never got back.

Now the Republic of Ireland striker, 21, is in advanced talks with Genoa over a season-long loan deal. If completed, it would be his third loan away from the Seagulls in under 18 months—and a frank admission that his path to regular football runs through Serie A right now, not the Premier League.

Ferguson's last two loans went nowhere. In February 2025, Brighton sent him to West Ham under manager Julen Lopetegui, a coach Ferguson knew. He made one start in eight appearances across four months, touching the ball rarely and scoring zero goals. The spell was designed to rebuild confidence after injury. It failed.

Brighton's new boss Fabian Hurzeler explained the logic at the time. Evan has had a frustrating 12 months with injuries, Hurzeler said, and for him to get back to the level he's capable of and to continue his development, he really needs to be playing regularly.

Ferguson then moved to Roma on a season-long loan last summer. The Italian capital offered a fresh environment and a chance to rebuild his reputation. He scored five goals and provided two assists across 22 appearances in all competitions—modest output for a striker, and not enough to win over Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini.

Worse, his injury demons returned. Gasperini said in April: It is the fourth sprain he has suffered, so the situation has become a bit complicated. Every time he changes direction, the ankle seems to sprain. It is one ankle or the other. The one he had an operation on is the most problematic. It has not completely solved the problem.

Yet Ferguson remains valuable on paper. He signed a new contract with Brighton through June 2029, and sits on Transfermarkt's valuation at €20 million. In the 2023–24 season, before injury derailed him, he scored six goals in 27 Premier League appearances. Two seasons earlier, he netted six goals and two assists in 19 top-flight games as a teenager breaking through under Roberto De Zerbi.

That prospect—the 18-year-old dazzling the Premier League—feels a lifetime ago. Hurzeler's decision to loan him out again, even as a contracted player, signals that Brighton's confidence has evaporated. Genoa, managed by Daniele De Rossi, are hunting a striker before the Serie A season opens late this month and reportedly want a deal closed within ten days. Ferguson's experience in Italy, coupled with a willingness to leave him out to pasture, makes him an affordable option.

The cycle is clear now: loan, struggle, return, loan again. For a player who burst onto the scene as a generational Brighton prospect, the question is no longer whether he will succeed in the Premier League—it is whether he can stay fit long enough to succeed anywhere.
